Sara Cook bio

Native New Yorker Sara Cook is not only a creative & highly trained artist, but a technological innovator in the conversion of lenticular 2-D into 3-D and even 2-D into 4-D graphics. That is, she can make a totally flat image visible with several depths of field, or actually render it with a touch of animation. Ms. Cook took part in the world's first 2-D into 3-D conversion which she achieved in 1994 before all other attempts to develop similiar techniques beyond the range of any other achievements in the field.

Cook could imbue roundness to a flat form. Any curvature required for portraying 3-D depth could be spun into place & jump out of scenes that took the viewer far beyond the current standard of flat cut-outs on different planes. Today she wields her own armamentarium of unique techniques that are still unmatched.

Sara grew up in Park Slope Brooklyn where she studied drawing and sculpture at the Brooklyn Museum for several years. In this awe-inspiring setting she sketched varied exhibits each week & was encouraged to touch these world famous works of art, to sense their tactile depth & experience their weight. Sara won numerous awards in nation-wide art competitions. At the Brooklyn Library she created a short animation film, then continued her studies at The Art Students' League in Manhattan.

At Bucks Rock Camp where she studied with celebrated artist James Duprey, she taught oil painting & dimensional drawing techniques. After working as a stagehand throughout high school, she carried on her art studies at Hunter College, Fashion Institute of Design and the School of Visual Arts in New York City.

Also a talented dancer and choreographer, Sara has performed at the Copa Cabana, Nell's, The Pyramid, Sideshow by the Sea Shore, Earth Day at Prospect Park, and The Limelight. She co-founded a multi-media dance troupe- School of Fish & Siren Geniis. Cook has played with bands recording and performing throughout the East Coast, did fashion modelling, worked in set design, costuming and designed flyers for many star studded events.

In 1992, at Giorgio Gimelski's birthday gala, Sara met Bob, R Anthony Munn, Depthography's founder. He was about to open the world's first lenticular gallery. Munn had just figured out to capture actual animation over several seconds in a photograph and needed a subject. It was a serendipitous encounter that soon sparked the couple's first joint creation, The Siren Genii, a work in 4-D.

Sara took to the computer like a fish to water, making her one of New York's rare species, an offspring of the marriage of art & technology.

Depthography also boasts an opus in 3-D multi-media slide presentations in which Cook's figure appears as a diaphanous animated human screen. Images are seen through her skin in a piece entitled The Transparent Woman, exhibited both at the San Francisco Exploratorium and at the Georgio Gimelski's birthday celebration at the New York location where the Green Door parties are held.

At DEPTHOGRAPHY, Cook's work with Munn has been exhibited at Sony Amusement Park in Tokyo, Disney Imagineering, in Orlando Florida, Macy's Department Stores, Chanel Perfumes, The Warhol Estate, The United States Post Office, Department of Defense. HBO, Comedy Central Cable Network, Blockbuster Video, George Clinton & the P Funk Allstars, H R Giger, Janet Jackson, The United States Library of Medicine, Radio Station WFMU. Sara Cook has been creating singular art in this extraordinary avant-garde medium, and her body of work has been showcased and sold internationally.
